Press brakes, also known as brake presses or simply brakes, are essential machines in the metalworking industry used to bend sheet metal with precision and efficiency. These machines utilize tooling known as dies and punches to achieve the desired bends in the metal.
The Process Behind Metal Bending and Forming at BBC Steel
A press brake consists of two main sections: the upper section and the lower section. The upper section of the press brake holds the punch, which typically has a general V shape. This punch is designed to exert significant force on the metal sheet. The lower section contains the die, which has a corresponding V shape to match the punch. The die serves as the base against which the metal is pressed and bent.
During the bending process, the two sections of the press brake move together, forcing the sheet metal between them. As the punch descends into the die, it applies pressure to the metal, causing it to bend at the desired angle. This method allows for precise control over the bending process, ensuring accurate and consistent results.
